Learn how we ensure data quality

Introduction to Clarent

Clarent’s mission is to create a single source of truth for senior living teams to make informed decisions. We integrate data from different systems and calculate more than 150 specific senior living KPIs.

How does Clarent ensure data quality and what is KPI Alignment?

One of the main challenges in any business intelligence / data project is ensuring data quality.

At Clarent, we have developed a process we call “KPI Alignment" which involves having all key stakeholders agree on the definition (and source of truth) for each of the 150+ senior-living specific KPIs we calculate in our KPI Library.

KPI Alignment has 2 main steps: agreeing on the definition of each KPI and then mapping the data correctly from the source system to the KPI.

Here’s an example: we have the KPI “controllable operating expenses.” With each customer we confirm what expenses should be included and we also review which GL codes should be included so that we confirm we have accurate data. We also include the definition and details in the appendix of all our reports so that everyone who looks at our KPIs knows how they were calculated and where the data came from.

Another example: we calculate the % of frontline staff who are employed > 90 days. To calculate this, we connect to your payroll system, pull a list of titles, and then review all those titles together to confirm that we are calculating the right definition of “frontline” staff vs. leadership or corporate employees. We can also group employees by other attributes to support other hiring or retention analytics.

What does success look like

KPI Alignment is a key part of our implementation and on-boarding process. We run KPI Alignment for the 4 main types of data we pull into Clarent: sales, financials, labor, and rent roll.

As we complete KPI alignment for each data source, KPIs derived from that data source become available in the Clarent KPI Library. This means that we can make progress faster by working iteratively. For example, once we’ve finished KPI Alignment on CRM data then sales KPIs become available in the KPI Library.

Clarent’s KPI Alignment process is a collaborative process that ensures that data is correct and trusted by users. We firmly believe that trust is a critical part of any data project, and we pride ourselves on being good partners to our clients by ensuring that they have confidence in data from Clarent.
